Patrick Conyngham was born in Drogheda and educated in
Ireland, England and Scotland and attended drama school in New York. He
began exhibiting in Ireland in 1990 at the low-key Kennedy Gallery, though
he had been exhibiting in London since 1984.
He has had countless exhibitions both in Ireland and
the UK. The paintings speak for themselves of course with the richness
of their colours and imagery but some insights into his reasons for painting
and his approach may be gained from his own statements at one of his more
recent exhibitions. " These images are concerned with expressing a soul's
journey, though they may derive and incorporate elements from the tangible.
They are about interior conditions that may be influenced by outside events,
aiming at a feeling of balance and harmony. Often executed in a contemplative
state of being, hoping to impart a sense of mystery, myth, lore and magic.
Sometimes they slip in and out of the representational and find themselves
more abstracted, on the edge, ephemeral. The variation on colour, texture,
thickness of paint, smudging, blurring, reflecting the constant levels
of flux or change in consciousness itself. They are a kind of diary, trying
to elicit an intuitive response from the viewer."
